WingFest 23′ Event

We are delighted to say that our first WingFest event went OFF with a bang.

Photo: Howard Shep

Building on our one year anniversary demo event in 2022. We have expanded to create ‘WingFest 2023’ our inaugural Wingfoil racing and fun demo event at our centre in Poole; Easyriders Sandbanks Beach Club.
With superb winds on both days we managed to complete a full 12 rounds of racing, 7 slalom and 5 course racing, with over 25 happy competitors.

Shore road is possibly one of the best foil racing venues in the country for all disciplines.
We’re no strangers to competition, Andy Easyriders founder is current Barbados wing racing champion, and Gemma Soloman, Centre manager is current British kite waveriding Champion and also just won the womens place for the worlds first fliteboard E-foil enduro race from the Needles to Shore road. So we were super excited to bring some fun racing to our doorstep for the local winging & watersports community to enjoy and experience.

As well as Wingfoil racing, for those who already can do this latest form of wind powered foiling watersport, we delivered over 75 FREE wing taster sessions to the public.
Alongside this, we had a procession of displays and kit from all the leading wing foiling manufacturers giving beginner, intermediate and expert wingers the chance to use all the latest and greatest equipment in sublime conditions.

We were stoked that two of the Easyriders team got on the podium for the womens; Lucy Davison in 2nd and Gemma Soloman 3rd. Anna Colonette took the extremely well deserved win in both the youth girls and womens categories.
Local hero and championship windsurfer Guy Cribb came 2nd in the mens, sandwiched in-between the visiting Wigglesworth brothers Hugo, 15, taking the convincing win and Toby, 13, on Guy’s heels in 3rd.

I’m delighted with the way the event went, challenging but great conditions for racing and trying new toys. A great vibe both on the beach and on the water fantastic to see all levels out there giving it a go on the race course from some of the best juniors on the international circuit, to my friends and locals chucking their hat in the ring and having a whole load of fun doing so.

It’s all about having fun on the water and wingfoiling truly lends itself to being safe, easy to learn and versatile as a watersport, it  works inland, on the coast, on bumpy and flat water, through light to strong winds.
We hope to build on the event for 2024 and get more people into the sport between then and now.

This event wouldn’t have been anywhere near as awesome as it was without the support and help from our brilliant team and all the brands that came along, supported, helped out and donated prizes;
BKSA, BPKC, Easyriders, Ballistic
F-One and Manera, North and Mystic, Lifejacket, Cabrinha, Buccaneer
Naish, AFS, RedBull Spect, Neil Pryde & JP, Funky Peach, hydration from Liquid Death.
Race Director Arky and his harrem Ash and Hannah, the genius photographer Howard Shep.

Keep an eye out for next years dates, we can’t wait to run this event again!

A piece of Portugal paradise

Just north of Porto, Viana do Castelo is a beautiful town full of history and character but of more importance to us and you a growing watersports mecca.

The winter offers up a fantastic swell season and the summer bring the wind. Typical trade winds through the summer (April-Oct) provide 15-25knts from the North West, presenting slightly cross off steady breeze perfection in an expansive bay just off the harbour entrance.

With a lighter forecast on the cards, we jam packed the van full of all the toys from E-foils and surfboards to every size of wing, kite and foil set ups – oh, and our jetski. We were prepped for everything…except the ability to stretch in the van during our mammoth road trip!

With a couple of accommodation options theres something to suit everyone. Self-catered town houses boasting a lovely garden and roof terrace for soaking up some sunshine and just next door Feel Viana sports hotel for those seeking a little more luxury with access to a spa, outdoor pool, skate pump track and the best buffet breakfast around. The latter being a great option for any couples wanting to please both parties between watersports enthusiast and ‘along for a holiday’.

True to custom the wind direction settled nicely in to its NW habit and delivered a good 10+ knots on top of the forecast each afternoon.
Allowing us to quickly fall in to our routine of E-foil, tow-foil and surf mornings. Followed by action packed wind afternoons.

Viana is one of those spots that is also a hub for tourism and has so much to offer on a no wind forecast…or so we hear…… we’re yet to truly test that theory as we were on the water every single day through the week. Wether winging or kiting, each evening the group went to bed full of delicious food, tiredness and eager to do it all again the next day

We’ll be returning next year for sure, for double the time and double the action. Get in touch to book a place and a spot in the van for your kit.
Dates will be 16-23 & 23-30 September 2023 and we’d love for you to join us.

Winter is coming

And with a Sandbanks Beach Club membership we’ve got you covered!

Head down to the beach, grab the most ideal set up or rig up your own kit with the ease of a compressor and get yourself stoked for an awesome session on the water with some chat from the team.

This can be the reality of your session…every day!

The location

Right on the seafront at Shore Road, the water action to be had is just a stones throw from our front door.
Plenty of beach space to rig and with hook sands just south west of us for some wave action, a sand bar straight out front creating low-tide flat condtions and high tide little kickers and a vast bay of deep water for foiling we’re at the spot with something for everyone.  Not quite ready to head off the seafront – no problem we still have our well established harbourside location too

Ireland Classic Coaching Trip

It’s the message we’ve been itching to send for a while now……Easy Holidays are back! And we’re starting things off with an absolute classic – Ireland.
Whilst you might not be donning your flip flops or bikini, this trip delivers epic conditions in stunning scenery with expert coaching from us.

We pack the vans full to the brim with kit and head off on a road trip adventure, Brandon Bay and the Maharees Peninsula is home for the week.

The Mid 2021 Season Lowdown

It’s been a unique and exciting start to the season here at Easyriders. We’ve been taking big new steps, making advances in our set up and tuition and all the while enjoying the sun and new views we have of Sandbanks from Easyriders Sandbanks Beach Club! We’re so excited watching the world begin to re-awaken to watersports- to see familiar faces out on the water shredding with us once again, to see customers start to enquire to get involved with sport again and to also to see mass events open up in the watersports world! Shout out to the Olympic Windsurfing where Tom and Emma did the UK proud… watch out for the foil to enter in 2024! Meanwhile the new kid on the block, winging, has appealed to sailors and kiters alike! We’re all eagerly over-watching the growth of the sport into an international phenomenon… with freestyle tricks, beautiful foil gybes, foil downwind 360s and wave riding emerging from leading wingers across the globe, definitely pointing at this sport growing to bigger things…!

In terms of our input on the winging front, we are leading the way for the whole of the UK, so have been involved since the birth of the sport. Andy Gratwick and Sam Ross (2024 Olympic Coach) co-wrote the first Wingsurf/Wingfoil instructor pathway back in 2020 and we’ve seen that delivered now to many instructors and trainers, who now deliver this in over a dozen schools nationwide. So if you’re interested in giving ‘the wing thing’ a go, hop onto your nearest ‘Wingtro’ from your local centre and share the froth for this up and coming sport!

On other instructor course news- we now have a beautiful base in Sandbanks, on the beach front itself, where we’ve been welcoming our instructors to for their training courses. Leading the majority of our instructor courses from Sandbanks Beach Club, we’ve trained SUP, Kite and Wing Instructors and we also hosted a wealth of different events, such as the Youth Kitesurf Foil Weekend and the Access Adaptive Adventures Camp. Every instructor in and out of these doors gets use of all of our kit related to the sport, our changing rooms and showers, our flash locations both harbour side and seafront side and our fantastic trainers. There really is no-where better you could train! We can’t wait to see what else this centre is capable of, with nothing but watersports on our brains we’re certain it’ll continue to be a hub for foil, SUP, kite, windsurf and wing training, events and excitement!

Adding to the growing list of new toys for the year, we have warmly welcomed the new e-foils! Big shout out to flightboard for these… Every instructor that’s had an experience on these so far has returned to the centre soaking wet with a massive grin across their face- and since that is the aim of our business, we can’t wait to share these with you too! Give us a call to get yourself booked in!

Obviously though, as we take on new kit this season- we’re turning our heads toward end of season too and are keen to help you out in your watersports ventures by providing you with secondhand kit! All of it being top of the range, fresh technology 2021 kit, we’ve compiled a list of all of our wings, kites, SUPs, bars and boards for sale… only used for 2 or 3 months and ready to be shifted to make space to keep the kit we instruct on as fresh as we can! With any purchase of second hand gear before end of season you pay a £200 deposit, we provide you with a free 10 hour hire card (worth £150) and you can turn up in September and collect your new toy! Ring us or check out the website for the full list of prices.

In summary, despite the lack of wind so far this season, we’re twice as busy and big and are loving it! We’re all very excited to welcome back the autumn winds and swell and hope you’re all getting out on the water as much as possible this summer! If you haven’t jumped on the foil train yet or are intrigued by the wing, give us a shout and we can help!

Lots of orange love to all of our Easyrideans shredding out there!

Andy and the Easyriders Team Xx

Awesome Adaptive Kite Action

We’ve been teaming up with the amazing crew at Access Adventures for the last 8 years to offer up an adaptive kite skills camp, and after missing last year due to Covid it was great to welcome the team back to Poole for another great weekend!

A good friend of ours and long term helper at Access Adventures, Sean Rose (Paralympian, XGames medallist & World Champion Water-skier to name a few of his accolades) came down a day earlier to get a sneaky session in first along with Alan Grace before the group arrived on Saturday. (Come on Jane – your turn next!)

With a couple of new adapted sit-ski style boards to try out, Sean and Alan embraced a light wind session, getting a good few runs in – with a bit of kite looping to help along the way!

Our new centre on the seafront along Shore Road allowed us to get straight out into the deep water of Poole Bay with plenty of space, a team of 3 instructors and using the rib and jet ski for Safety cover and the occasional taxi back upwind we had a cracking session.

With a slightly rainy & marginal forecast on the horizon for Saturday morning we held out hope for a bit of breeze in the afternoon that came through beautifully for our 7 eager participants.
All complete beginners to kite flying a lighter breeze allowed them to build their confidence on the kites without getting overpowered.

With the group progressing nicely on the power kites, they were able to then apply those skills to the buggy.  The buggy has an adapted handle for steering, rather than standard foot steering, along with all-terrain tyres allowing the group to gain a bit of speed through the park whilst maintaining stability!

For those of you that have caught the kitesurfing bug, give us a call to find out more about adaptive kite lessons we can provide in Poole.

Access Adventures then offer a week long kite skills camp in Greece and many other adaptive sports and activities throughout the UK.

A big thanks to Access Adventures for allowing us to help out with this great activity day, to British Kitesports Association for supporting a great initiative and to 514 Elemental Kitesports for providing some of the kit.

Foil Frenzy!

Here at Sandbanks Beach Club we’re exploiting our glamorous new location, team and facilities to prepare youth from all over the country to represent Great Britain in kite foiling!

This weekend around a dozen members of the British Sailing Team adult and youth squads have been taking over the centre and filling our shop with conversations about starting line tactics, missing foil bolts, general race banter and competitive mayhem! The competitors are training with Sam Ross, Andy Gratwick and the Easyriders Team to get themselves in the best shape for their upcoming competition in Gizzeria, Italy, where they will be representing TEAM GB.

Friday kicked off with the youth squad. After a bit of equipment preparation, the team had a morning of tow foiling and pump foiling behind our Ballistic ribs- a good alternative way to train that keeps the squad on the foil for those wind-less days! However, the squad were delighted to see the afternoon bring in a sea breeze. One of the great conveniences of the foil is that it doesn’t need much wind to get a good session in, so they headed out for some kite foil training on the water. The squad flew around between Bournemouth Pier and Hook Sands, focussing on turning techniques and building speed- obviously essential race skills!

Saturday started off with a race preparation session for the senior team on the beach. This was led by Sam Ross (our new team member… and Olympic windsurf and kitesurf race coach!) who prepped the guys for their day of racing. The sunny Saturday brought through a light SW sea breeze again in the early afternoon, transforming our otherwise tourist packed beach into a foil playground! The aspiring Olympians then went and battled it out in a series of races with rib support and coaching tips from both Sam, Andy (Our boss… Owner of Easyriders, Head of the BKSA and kitesurf race coach!) and the Easyriders team. Safe to say the kite foilers were in good hands, and will have massively benefitted from the blissful foil conditions, top class coaching and facilities in our new centre. They managed 6 back to back races with Ellie Aldridge, local Poole resident and current European champion, taking 6 consecutive wins. The day was finished off with the usual race debates… a dozen competitive young characters sat around the training area watching replay videos of the race finishes- I’m sure you can imagine the raised voices and sunburnt smiley faces that filled our centre for the evening!

The third day saw the return of the youth squad- the Under 17 racers. Due to the cloudy conditions and lack of wind, we had a quick change of plan and got them out foil towing again behind the rib for the morning. Then for the afternoon we headed out with the team on the kite foil kit again to work on starts after having a chat about tactics and line bias. We wish our kite foilers all the best in their competitions and hope the training will have paid off!

Our Easyriders team owning the beach!

As well as obviously benefiting those who attended, the racing provided amazing entertainment for the general public and the holiday makers on Shore Road beach over the weekend. It was a bit of a spectacle to have the sky filled with colourful 12m race kites! Also we’ve now seen the sort of events our centre is now capable of hosting, and we’re all so excited about the possibilities for future events! Our team are now very used to receiving and answering the general vibe off the public that weekend…

‘Wow! That’s awesome! So how do I get into kite foiling!?’

Wing Froth!

Any time you head to the beach or the harbour lately is undeniable that Winging has really taken off.
Windsurfers and Kiters are agreeing on something….winging is currently where it’s at!

We’ve watched (and helped!) this sport grow over the last year or so and must admit that in the beginning whilst we were loving learning something new ourselves we were a little dubious as to where it could go and if it would fully take off. Well this past weekend especially is a great example of just how well it is and will continue to be popular.

With a forecast of Easterlies, the ‘froth’ wasn’t coming off the surface of the water but instead from the new and progressing wingsurfers and foilers who joined us to make the most of ‘champagne’ conditions.
Sunshine. Steady Wind. Flat Water.

It’s been great to see lots of Windsurfers, Kiters and new watersports enthusiasts having a go and amazing to see the likes of Adam, Ben, Matt and Jim getting their first flights after only a few hours on the wing. The smiles at the end are a great reminder of why we love what we do.

For those of you who have already dipped their toe in to the winging world, we’ll be running our first wing coaching day on Sunday 23rd May.
This is aimed at those of you looking to get more sustained flights on the foil, start gybing, gliding and foiling transitions.
8 spaces available, get in touch for more info.

If you’re new to winging or windsports in general our 2hr wingtro course is a great place to start and get hooked. Find out more info here

Have we got news for you

It’s not just our waistbands that are expanding this lockdown!

Along with our well established and successful operations from ‘Easybeach’ on the harbour side of Sandbanks, we will be setting up our new HQ, training & demo centre and shopfront right on the beach at Shore Road, opening in May.

BCP council have undertaken a big development project of the Shore Road promenade area over the last two years.  Within this project there was a tender for a watersports centre that we’re extremely proud to announce we won.

Easyriders ‘Sandbanks Beach Club’ is the reality of a vision we’ve always dreamed of; premium facilities, unrivalled demo & rental options, exceptional training centre and unbeatable office views and all still with our friendly and inclusive top rate services in watersports tuition from beginner to Olympic.

Read more about our exciting new plans here, and be sure to follow us on instagram and facebook for the latest updates on our fit out and opening preparations!

Whilst we’ve got this new project keeping us busy through the latter half of lockdown we’re still prepped and ready to get you back out on the water as soon as we’re permitted to, and it looks like it is shaping up to be another busy season.
Get in before the crowds and give us a call to get some lessons booked in, we don’t have a crystal ball for an exact date of ‘freedom’ but we’re flexible to change bookings if restrictions dictate the need.

In our 20yrs of running we’ve always worked with the best brands and kit on the market, and we have some exciting new partnerships coming up within our demo centre and shop, one of which is the swiss wing brand Ensis, check them out here

Look forward to catching you all on the beach soon!

Andy

December Newsletter

Dust your neoprene off & get your game face on – we’re back in action!

Lockdown 2.0 is over, sort of, we have a new set of regulations to adapt and adhere to but thankfully included in that is the ability to get all you keen bean learners back out on the water.

Lessons will be resuming again with us 7days a week until further notice. We’d be being slightly dishonest to completely ignore the difference in temperature from the beginning of November to now… but as the saying goes “there’s no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes” 🙂

Get properly prepared for your winter kiting with some extra neoprene layers, boots, gloves and hats. Give King of Watersports a shout for all your warmth needs.

Now for the C-word …. CHRISTMAS! It’s going to look a little different this year, and whilst we can’t help with your roast dinner logistics, we can make your Christmas shopping easy. Vouchers for Kitesurfing, SUP, Foiling, Wingsurfing, Holidays and more are available on our website or over the phone. We can email or post a voucher to your for a specific lesson or rental or for an amount to be put towards anything Easyriders related.

We’ve got a number of second-hand kite items for sale on the website, from kites, wings, bars, foils and boards. Have a look at our shop page and give us a shout for further information on anything and for package options.

Last week we embraced the cold combining an introductory ‘foiling fundamentals’ lesson with a photo shoot for Ballistic Ribs. They’re fantastic boats and if you’re considering getting yourself some water wheels, get in touch with them. Or if you’d like to book in some foiling and winging lessons then give us a call 01202 744 055 or email [email protected] .

We’ve also got some exciting plans in the pipeline for 2021 … watch this space! In the meantime we hope you’re all keeping warm and staying safe out on the water.

Take it easy

Andy & The Easyriders Team

So, here we go again!

It’s been a funny old year, but we’ve had a pretty good run.

Back in March we had the strangest start to a season to date, and even then wouldn’t have envisaged that we’d be ending it in a similar way with a nationwide lockdown.  But once again we have to do whats best and legal for friends, family and you our customers.
We will be closing our doors once more for all face to face operations for the duration of lockdown.

This time the lockdown comes at a naturally quietening time of the year for UK activity, however it’s still a great shame as more of you than ever were keen to continue with your progression and new-found watersports passions you ignited through the summer (despite some rather ‘fresh’ temperatures the last couple of days!).

Right about now, in a typical easyriders year (for the last 17yrs!) we’d be just setting off on a downwinder home along the coast back to our pousada in Icaraizinho, Brazil.  Jumping in the pool with a quick beer to watch the sunset before heading out for dinner to discuss the great kiting conditions and progression the group had made that day.
We’re for sure REALLY missing it, but instead will continue to make the most of the epic winter wind and conditions, and be continually planning for more kite adventures home and abroad as soon as we can.

Participation in watersports is still allowed through this lockdown, which is great news and will be a huge bonus for us all to keep in check with our mental health, stay active and enjoy the autumn winds.
If you are heading out on the water PLEASE be sure to be SAFE.  You can check out the advice and guidance from the BKSA and BSUPA below.

Only go out if you are at a competent and independent level, and don’t go out alone. We are allowed to meet one other person from outside our household for outdoor exercise, so be sure to meet your kiting/SUP buddy on the beach and have a rescue plan & signal should any of you get in to trouble.

If you’re keen to get some sunshine, kiting and surf in then get in touch for booking details for our Barbados coaching clinic in January & February 2021.  We are continually monitoring regulations for travel and will update those who are keen to join us as often as possible through the next few weeks.  We’re optimistic for the Caribbean due to the hotter climate of Barbados, the outdoors lifestyle and their pragmatic and organised way of trying to retain their tourism industry.  We know the island well and are in continual contact with local friends out there for updates on the situation.

If over the next few weeks you’re going to get on top of a bit of early Christmas shopping or want to plan a surprise for someone to look forward to (or yourself), then we will still be operational to process vouchers and take bookings for the future.  Give us a call, send an email or check out the website shop page here.

Thank you, once again, for all your continued support. It’s been great to see so many of you out and enjoying the water all Summer and in to the Autumn.

Take it easy,

Andy

Heading in to Autumn

What a Summer!

Off the back of probably the strangest times most of us have experienced, one of the positives to come out of it all is a new and re-ignited interest and enthusiasm for all things outdoors and water sports based.

We’ve experienced our busiest summer yet and have all you lovely people to thank for continued support and business, and all our amazing team for their incredibly hard work over the last few months delivering the high demand of lessons.

Some of the awesome easyriders team

Along with a big increase in beginner Kitesurfing and SUP lessons, we’ve also taught more and more kite foil coaching and started a venture in to the new world of Wingsurfing/foil.
Wing Foiling / Inflatable Manta Ray Wrestling / Wing Surfing / Wing Wanging / Wingboarding…..what is should be called hasn’t fully been agreed on yet, but it’s a new fantastic and accessible wind sport.
Last week we ran the world’s first Wing Surfing Instructor course, and are fully up and running with lessons……we’re winging it 😉

Our Autumn is shaping up a little differently to usual, with a lot of turbulence and regularly changing regulations we’re fuelling our focus towards our UK based lessons and coaching, including day trips and setting our sites on a 2021 filled with coaching trips abroad, kicking off with the Caribbean wave & foil clinics.

Thank you all for your support, and hope to see you on the beach soon.

Spring Newsletter

It’s certainly been a stranger start to the Spring/Summer season than I think any of us could have envisaged.

We’d usually be writing to tell you about how wonderful it is to see you out on the water again after the winter. Of a high spirited Open day and bustling Easter period with lots of you Kiting, SUPing, Foiling and giving this Wing thing a go.

How Spring Season should look at EasyBeach

Instead what do a bunch of active kiters / water enthusiasts do during a pandemic lockdown?
Well, we’ve been super lucky with the weather which has enthused us all to make the most of our allocated exercise, keeping fit with running, cycling and ghostbuster/roxanne workouts (alternating lunges throughout the song and a burpee on every ghostbuster/roxanne….I encourage you all to try it and not have jelly legs at the end!).

Embracing the positives and enjoying lots of family time; mega sup slides and learning to ride bikes, lego building and a lot of story time!

Andy has granted the core team a ‘Corona Bursary’ to fund some personal upskilling. The team have been encouraged to use this time to work on something they’ve always wanted to do. From Silver Smithing to Sports Nutrition, Resin Art to Ocean Athlete wim hoff breath training, it’s an eclectic mix and who knows maybe there will be some Easyriders side line businesses cropping up!

Unfortunately along with a local impact on our activity another element affecting us is the halt on our overseas coaching clinics.  In 3 weeks’ time we should be jetting off to Peru with a group of enthused wave riders, and whilst we’re on board with what needs to be done to protect everyones health, we’re still gutted to not be returning to this absolutely legendary wave spot…this year anyway….rest assured we’ll be back next year.

The 2019 Peru team, many of who were looking forward to returning with us this year with some new faces too.

Brazil and our Caribbean trips are a little further down the road and so we have a little more time to review the situation before confirming/cancelling anything.
We’re keen to get back to and support our remote and smaller destinations that are so reliant upon tourism for their economy, and albeit speculation this has got to pose some debate for some areas opening up sooner rather than later?  So fingers crossed for the Caribbean in early 2021.

However we’re super excited and busy planning for explorations & adventures a little closer to home and looking forward to rediscovering all the magic on our doorstep and nationally.  Get in touch if visiting epic spots with top level coaching on hand without having to step on a plane is something you want to get involved with.

Some truly epic spots and conditions can be found without too much travel.

Whilst we can’t get on the water quite yet, get yourself geared up to be ready the moment we can.  We have second hand kites available in all sizes, trust & click bars and a number of different twin tips, surfboards and foils depending on your interest ability.  Check out the full list of kites & bars here.  And for boards & foils follow this link here. Give us a shout for any further details.

Take your pick!

We’ve also set the Easyriders Puzzleation Challenge in motion!  There are 3 Easyriders puzzles designed by Amanda (you can thank her for the testing black & white lettering section!) currently out being worked on, ready to send on to the next person.  Get in touch to get involved!

And finally, a big THANK YOU to those who have continued to enquire about bookings, bought a voucher or a piece of merchandise, liked, shared and interacted on our social media.  It’s an economically turbulent time for small businesses and we’d be lying if we said it wasn’t worrying, so any amount of support small or big is massively appreciated.
And before long we will be back on the water, teaching, coaching and sharing the stoke.

Stay Home. Stay Safe. Stay Connected.

Why Kitesurfing Needs Lessons

Well it just does !!

How many people would buy a hang glider and chuck themselves off the first steep hill and work out what to do when they are in the air?

The forces of nature involved in our wonderful sport much like hang gliding are what makes it so addictive and exhilarating, however those forces are powerful!

Kitesurfing is a safe sport if practiced safely and the only way to do that is to get properly trained.

There are many good instructional videos out there and we at Easy Riders actually recommend some of them to students to help their progression, however there is no substitute for a guiding and steadying hand on the controls when you take your first steps on the Kiteboarding journey.

We could leave it at that because that’s the crux of it.

But here’s a little more as to why you should take physical lessons when learning to kitesurf.

It’s somewhat hypocritical of me to write this as I have to be honest, I didn’t take lessons myself, but now (fortunately) things are very different to 1997 when I began my kitesurf journey.

This was before the invention of the twin tip, 4 line bar, and indeed kitesurf instructors! It was a complete trial and error process…. I have to admit to trying  to use the kite the first time without even pumping it up!

23 years down the line there are a collection of great equipment manufacturers , thousands of instructors and hundreds of kitesurfing/ kiteboarding schools worldwide providing safe value for money lessons  on how to get into kitesurfing safely. We at easy riders are one of the nationally accredited BKSA schools based in Poole harbour.

In fact, just recently the Global kitesurf Association have released a new ISO standard for  the chickenloop release systems, ensuring all perform to some minimum safety standards.

But lets get back to that common question. Do I need lessons to learn to kitesurf?

I often analogise this to riding a powerful motorbike, as it’s a little easier to comprehend and compare for people without a concept of kitesurfing.

If you did try to get onto a 600cc sports bike and figure it out yourself with no experience, guidance or knowledge of the machine, it is not going to go well.

In fact the best outcome would be for the novice to not find the start sequence to get the engine going!!

So to lay out a few basic areas that wouldn’t go so well in kitesurfing:

Rigging.

When delivering instructor courses, I ask candidates to predict the likelihood of a random dog walker on the beach rigging a kitesurfing kite correctly.

They usually indicate about a 90% failure rate. (some women perhaps may read the instructions carefully enough to nail it) but that is just the start of how a good teacher can help guide you safely through learning the basics of kitesurfing.

Orientation and wind awareness

If you don’t have prior experience it can be very confusing. I had a competitive windsurf and dinghy sailing background and I still needed to study how the ‘Wind window’ worked/moved and reacted to  you the pilot.

If you rig/launch/ attempt to fly a kite incorrectly, it simply won’t work, and is most likely to end with you being dragged along the ground.

Flying the thing….it is just like flying a kite surely???

Well yes it is, although it’s a fuel-injected freight train of a kite with a 3 dimensional trimming system.

I have over the last two decades, only had a handful of people who have taken to this control system almost immediately.

The flying control and sensation is both ergonomic and flowing once you master it, however, any mistakes once you are on a proper kitesurfing kite are punished both by significant traction and crashing , not good for the kit, or more importantly your knees and elbows, let alone your pride.

Getting on the board……I can wakeboard, How different can it be.

Correct, the actual water start/ board start manoeuvre is almost identical in terms of body position and motion. However, you have to get into the position, and put the board on your feet whilst flying the kite with one hand. Then you have to generate enough power with the kite in the right direction and redirect the kite before it crashes into the water at the same time as rising up from the water onto your feet.

You then have to point the board, steer the kite, not fall over, or crash the kite whilst aiming across the wind (which you have to feel and can’t see) all at the same time.

Luckily there are now a number of tried tested and well developed teaching schemes around the world which place all these skills into a logical, safe and digestible order to learn in an enjoyable way.

Having a fair bit of experience in teaching now, and in scheme writing.  I believe if you invest in lessons at a BKSA recognised school like Easyriders, you will not only learn safely, you will also learn more quickly and save your bones and pockets.

At Easyriders you will also meet some great people, enjoy the process and become a good positive addition to our wonderful kitesurfing sport. Why not get booked…

We Salute You

To all our customers & friends who work for the NHS, medical industry and key workers, we ‘Easyriders salute’ you and all the hard work you have been doing and continue to do during this time.

It’s not just during this time we appreciate your work, time and commitment but also during the last 16yrs we have been running kitesurf coaching holidays where you have continued that commitment in yours & our holidays.
We love the eclectic mix of different people and professions we meet through our kitesurfing coaching holidays and are super proud of the knowledge and skill you all bring along with you.
Though you’ve not all always heeded your own advice!
Tom Debenham, you’ve dedicated your own bicep to the cause of winning an arm wrestle.
Ben Wallace, whilst your ability to walk down a beach without kicking a rock (to the detriment of your toe) is questionable, we have every confidence that your ability to look after us all is top level.
Graham Cooke, we applaud your endurance through hard work. Especially the hard work of down loops and back rolls, it took a good week and a half of building up the courage (and beating up your 9m) to finally nail them.

Jo Morton, dragging yourself down the beach is an extreme way of avoiding giving piles advice on your holiday (can’t blame you really!).
Louise Osgood you gained so many kiting skills in Barbados, along with a patchwork of bruises taking on the shore break.
Karen Wingham we hope holding your nerve with patients is easier than during a long pack down swim in Peru.
Lydia, you are truly on the front line. Lets hope it doesn’t involve you having to judge the depth of swimming pools!
Seb Willis, your personal hydration and sunscreen application we’re certain doesn’t reflect your amazing doctoring skills.
And Seb Knudsen, we respect your dedication to ICU in Australia, although we hope you’re not advising patients to apply olive oil to their burnt lips like you tried to in Barbados back in 2008.

To you all, and many many more. We are proud to know you, call you our friends and can’t wait to kite with you again soon.

Take it easy,

Andy, Amanda, Gem
& The Easyriders Team

Weather the storm

I have had a long hard think and discussion with the team here at Easyriders about the current situation.

In 17 years of trading we have never faced a challenge like this one, and I hope we never do again.
I feel we need to do our bit and make the right decision, all be it a tough one. For the bigger picture. For our families, parents, friends, nhs workers and many around the world who are already ahead of our curve here in the UK.

So, we will be closing with immediate effect. We will not be running any form of lessons / coaching / ITC courses / holiday clinics until the situation improves.

I am, and will continue to, stand by my wonderful team and I PROMISE to them and all our customers & friends that we will come out the other side. Stronger, fitter (thanks to Joe Wickes kids P.E), more organised, mentally sound, and in my personal case…..a lego technics JEDI.

Take it easy, take care of yourselves and each other

Andy & The Team

Corona Virus Update

Our thoughts are with you all during these turbulent times.

Here at Easyriders our focus, along with the rest of you, is the health and safety & well-being of you (our customers), ourselves and our friends & family.

Kitesurfing & SUP provide a natural distance between people whilst giving exercise, fun and a breath of fresh air.  We will continue to deliver our Private Tuition lessons for both Kitesurfing and Paddle boarding.  However we will be pressing the pause button on our group lessons for the time being.

A couple of things we’re doing; now more than usual it’s important to be supporting your local small businesses.  Where we can, we will be buying vouchers from local shops, cafes or restaurants, to ensure that if we can’t go out and use them now we fully intend to when this all blows over.
Whilst it’s going to be tough times for all we’d love to encourage you to do the same, including for ourselves.  If Kite, SUP or Foiling is something you’re keen to learn or progress at in the future then give us a shout or take a look on the website to get a voucher.

We will be extending the date on all vouchers for an additional 12 weeks, and any vouchers bought now will come with an additional 6 months added to them.

The sun is on its way, let the freedom of the ocean alleviate some of this stress and help with some much needed Vitamin Sea!

Big Love, Elbow bumps and Easyriders Salute from all here,

Andy, Amanda, Gem, Lou, Melissa, Ben
& all of the Easyriders Family
